Francine A. LeFrak, founder of the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation, is a social entrepreneur and philanthropist dedicated to advancing women’s economic empowerment and financial fluency. Her work is grounded in a clear belief: when women have access to opportunity, skills, and financial confidence, they gain the power to lead independent and secure lives.

Across global and local initiatives, Francine A. LeFrak has developed a model rooted in women’s well-being, integrating physical, mental, and financial well-being. From the founding of Same Sky in Rwanda to expanding programs in the United States, her work creates sustainable pathways for women to move from instability to leadership.

Same Sky: Origins in Rwanda

What is women’s economic empowerment?

Women’s economic empowerment means providing access to income, skills, and financial fluency so women can support themselves and shape their futures.

In 2008, Francine A. LeFrak traveled to Rwanda and met women survivors of the 1994 genocide. Many were living in extreme poverty, yet demonstrated extraordinary resilience and talent. What they lacked was access to economic opportunity.

Rwanda Women in Training

In response, Francine A. LeFrak founded Same Sky through the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation as a trade-based initiative. Rather than traditional aid, Same Sky focused on skill-building and market access. Women were trained as artisans and created hand-crocheted jewelry for global distribution.

This approach reflects a core principle of the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation: opportunity creates empowerment. By connecting talent to markets, women gained not only income but long-term financial stability.

The Philosophy of Economic Dignity

Why does financial independence matter for women?

Financial independence gives women control over their decisions, their families’ futures, and their ability to participate fully in society.

At the center of Same Sky is the philosophy of dignity over aid. Francine A. LeFrak has consistently emphasized that while charity can provide short-term relief, sustainable work creates lasting transformation.

More than 800 women have participated in Same Sky, gaining income, stability, and confidence. Through this work, women are able to send their children to school, access healthcare, and invest in their communities.

This model also reinforces the importance of financial fluency. When women understand how to earn, save, and plan, they gain lasting power. This principle continues to guide the broader work of the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation.

Scaling Impact Through Sustainable Models

What makes a women’s empowerment model sustainable?

A sustainable model combines income generation, skill development, and long-term financial confidence.

Same Sky was designed not just as a program, but as a scalable model of women’s empowerment. By combining social impact with global trade, it created a system where opportunity could expand beyond one community.

The success of Same Sky in Rwanda became a blueprint for broader initiatives, including programs in the United States supporting women transitioning from incarceration. These programs provide vocational training, financial education, and community support.

This expansion reflects the broader vision of Francine A. LeFrak: to scale solutions that integrate financial fluency with women’s well-being.

Francine A. LeFrak Model for Women’s Well-Being

Francine A. LeFrak’s work in economic empowerment is part of a larger framework: The LeFrak Model for Women’s Well-Being, built on three pillars:

• Physical well-being

• Mental well-being

• Financial well-being

Same Sky represents the financial pillar in action. When combined with physical and mental support systems, this model creates a comprehensive approach to women’s empowerment.

This framework is now being implemented through initiatives such as the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being, demonstrating how economic empowerment connects directly to leadership, confidence, and long-term success.

A Scalable Model for Women’s Empowerment

Francine A. LeFrak’s journey reflects a clear and consistent mission: to expand opportunity, financial fluency, and well-being for women. Through the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation and Same Sky, she has built a model that is both practical and scalable.

Her work demonstrates that when women are given access to skills, income, and financial confidence, they do more than improve their own lives. They strengthen families, communities, and future generations.

Through the LeFrak Model for Women’s Well-Being, Francine A. LeFrak continues to lead a movement grounded in dignity, opportunity, and the belief that every woman has the power to thrive.
